Welcome to the Beehive State--no drones allowed.
At least that's what you might think from the 2003 Generosity Index. Several bloggers have commented already, here, here, here, and here. Ignoring the suggestive color coding in the chart, I have parsed the data and unearthed the real story: states with top-tier law schools all rank in the bottom half of the "generosity index" (depending on how you view U. of Texas and counting New York, at no. 25, in the bottom half). Hmmm.
I agree LDS tithing donations don't really fit the standard definition of a charity. The Church has billions of dollars in assets and spends most of its revenue on itself. The Church is a religious corporation (and a darned good one, as such corporations go), not a charitable enterprise. On the other hand, I wouldn't really consider the local Metropolitan Opera or Museum of Modern Art to be charities either, so I think Half-Canadian's comment hinting that LDS tithing is less charitable than other contributions is misleading. I hate to say it, but maybe Utahns are just more generous than the average American, if not the average Mississippian (by index) or Wyoman (by absolute rank).
