Judge Robert Bork
In the fact-is-stranger-than-fiction department, consider this story on the recent conversion of Judge Robert Bork, age 76, to Catholicism. Not that there's anything wrong with that--hey, JRR Tolkien was Catholic! But somehow I would have thought Judge Bork might have gotten around to thinking his way through fundamental personal commitments of this sort just a bit earlier in life. Go here for an interesting list of other notable figures converted to Catholicism by a talented Washington priest named John McCloskey.

Bork 101: Meridian Magazine, not generally noted as a site for legal commentary, has a short but entertaining Q&A interview with Judge Robert Bork. He established his place in legal history, you may recall, by failing to be confirmed to a US Supreme Court seat after showing he was three times smarter than Senator Joe Biden at the senatorial gauntlet formerly known as confirmation hearings. Judge Bork's wittiest quip: Irving Kristol said, "There is no culture war. There used to be one, but the other side won."
