Wanna get lucky?

Via Salt, a link to a BBC article by Professor Richard Wiseman (wise man :-) who gives his "four top tips for becoming lucky":

• Listen to your gut instincts - they are normally right

• Be open to new experiences and breaking your normal routine

• Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well

• Visualise yourself being lucky before an important meeting or telephone call. Luck is very often a self-fulfilling prophecy

Where is the energy

Yesterday's quote on Whiskey River is one that I used to keep a copy of somewhere in my desk:

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."

An old boyfriend of mine used to say he sorted things and people that entered his life according to what “added to” his life and what “took away” from it. The Whitman quote refers more to one’s vocation, but both of these ideas relate to sorting out what’s important and focusing on where the life or energy is that feeds us.

There are so many distractions. I don’t seem to be able to finish a book anymore, or complete a task without starting another. So many things interest me, but I’m not sure that giving everything a cursory glance really enriches me or just overloads me. I feel the need for a bit more focus.

A little while back, Alicia at Twilight Café commented on a piece on Daily Affliction called “The tragedy of commitment” which ends with “The future is full of possibilities that I must shoot in the head.” I think this is another attempt at focus. But I prefer the idea of just asking yourself what makes you come alive. Maybe by focusing on that the other things will automatically drop away. The trick, then, is to pay attention to what your energy or your heart is telling you.
