Free in our love
Stormwind has an interesting post on whether there is such a thing as soul mates. She looks at our expectations of each other and how we get disappointed when our expectations aren’t met. But we could view each relationship as unique, we could be open to people as they are and likewise open ourselves to reveal who we are:
Soul mates must exist... but perhaps they are more dependent on how much of ourselves we are willing to share and reveal, and not as dependent on finding some unique set of characteristics within another, other than the same willingness to be open in depth and reveal all including the inconsistencies.
Yesterday I was listening to Nelly Furtado’s excellent new album, Folklore. One song, Try, has been getting stuck in my head so I looked up the lyrics. The song is about the expectations we have in a relationship, and the final lines are:
All of the things we want each other to be
We never will be
And that's wonderful, and that's life
And that's you, baby
This is me, baby
And we are, we are, we are, we are
Free
In our love
We are free in our love
Walking and thinking
I just took advantage of the warm [sic] weather we're having (presently 27° F - and yes, we are obsessed with the weather here in New England) to take a long walk in town. I seem to do my best thinking when I'm walking. When I was younger I used to hike a lot in the White Mountains and I always noticed how a good, hard, all-day hike would leave my head free and clear. Or maybe it would finally get me out of my head and back into my body through the rhythm of walking, just putting one foot in front of the other. Anyway, I am back inside with a cup of hot chocolate, still thinking...Happy go lucky
Curt Rosengren adds more on how to be happy. Or lucky. Maybe it’s all the same.
Update: Okay, I just got around to actually reading the article that Curt links to at BBC News. It looks at a study of what makes people happy, along with the happiness formula they came up with (see the article): Happiness = P + (5xE) + (3xH). But here are some things the study found:
Four in ten men said sex made them happy, and three in ten said a victory by a favourite sports team. Ha-ha!
For seven in ten women happiness was related to being with family, and one in four said losing weight. Now that's just pathetic - the latter I mean.Romance featured higher for men than women. So did a pay rise and a hobby they enjoyed. Hmm...
Women were more likely to cite sunny weather. Okay. Anyway, this study was in England, right?
Finally, this:
Ingrid Collins, a consultant psychologist at the London Medical Centre, told BBC News Online: "I would be very surprised if people sat down and had to work out whether they were happy or not…We can all be happy in a heartbeat if we make the decision to be so."
What makes you happy? (Also see earlier post on how to get lucky.)
The Cooler
Last night I was in “The Cooler” – the movie, not the local weather pattern (more on that later). William H. Macy plays a guy who is such a loser that his bad luck rubs off on anyone he stands next to, thus his job as a “cooler” in a
It made me think of my post last week on luck, and the four tips for being lucky. “Luck is very often a self-fulfilling prophecy.”
As for the weather, the high today will be in the balmy upper 20°s F. Wednesday and Thursday this week are predicted to have highs of 8° and 10° respectively. Highs. And the weekend looks like more of the same.
