There were two major editorial presentations at Emerson for me. VP Duncan Schleiss gave a very thorough view of the Safety Instrumented System that Emerson has developed and is now available for customers. This is a well thought out system of allowing for safety systems and logic control systems to coexist, share, yet remain separate to the exten required by good safety practice. This is a hot technology area as all the major control suppliers are scrambling to extend the state of the art. The business benefits to customers has huge potential.

The second was in response to my pondering about building up the automation team in the face of the pending exodus of many engineers and technicians anticipated over the next few years. Emerson has devoted much effort to training--part of which involves sophisticated plant operations simulations. Look for more in a future article in Automation World.

I'm in Austin to visit a number of people. First off, both Emerson Process Management and National Instruments reported stellar financial results. Always glad to hear when things are going well in our little niche of the world.
