Graham Harris of Beckhoff Automation responded to one of my ramblings on the demise of trade shows with this perceptive post.

Gary One of the drawbacks in NA shows is that exhibitos are basically only showing products that are available. Most customers did not come to a show to see ideas or new concepts as they have already been told about them by the sales force. Compare that to SPS and Hanover in Germany. Automation suppliers use them to show new ideas, concepts and early versions of new products. People go to these shows because it is where the future is being shown.

Dick Morley sent a note in response to my post about the Not in my backyard syndrome. (That is, one reason manufacturing is leaving the US is because no one wants a factory in their own backyard.)

Good comments. Our comments are statistical not absolute. There always are areas of conflict with my insufferable comments. -Keep up the good work and we may take you up on your offer. Dick Morley

There could be something to geography in the analysis. Dick and Jim Pinto live in highly settled areas. I live in the Midwest. It may only be due to proximity, but it seems whenever a company is considering a new plant, competition is among a few Midwestern and a few Southern states. Maybe we're just hungry.
