I'm not a baseball fan and the Dayton Daily News barely covers soccer, so I don't spend a lot of time with the sports section in the summer. Now I see why. Half the section (it seemed, I didn't count words) was about sports--but not competition on the field amongst athletes. We've got Michael Vick--based on the last quote I saw attributed to him, looks like he's trying to figure out how a popular celebrity can get into trouble. Then we have the NBA referee who is being investigated for calls made on games in which he also bet. Since I'm a referee, I find this even more noxious than Pete Rose betting on games he managed. I was in Germany a couple of years ago when the story broke about the German soccer referee in a similar position. Goes to show that the office March Madness pool might be benign, but gambling can ruin lives.

ISA is holding a wireless summit in Vancouver this week. I had thought about going (actually, my wife wanted to visit there), but Wes is writing a feature article on the subject for our October issue. So, he's there. Sounds like lots of speeches. Wes says that John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management, easily had the best speech of the lot telling attendees to get off the dime and start using the technology. There was no word on how Emerson's customers are doing 8 months into its wireless program, though.
