As Martin Scorcese discovered when he made "The Last Temptation of Christ," religion can be box office poison. Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," on the other hand, is packing them in, with entire performances booked in advance by church groups.
Nevertheless, Gibson did violate one of Hollywood's cardinal rules: Never invest your own money in a production.
And there may be more controversy to come, since the Aramaic-speaking community hasn't weighed in yet on the accuracy of the subtitles.
