Genocide in our time [posted by Troy] I am working with a history instructor at work on a research module to her modern history class. We are going to be discussing the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, when over 800,000 people were hacked to death with machetes over a matter of months. It was like WWII all over again, but there were no allied forces storming the beaches this time. A modern holocaust. I spent tonight watching Ghosts of Rwanda by PBS, and I have to say that it is very powerful, shocking, and painful. Our country refused to act following the deaths of US marines in Somalia in 1992. The UN knew what was happening but no one did anything. Sorry to put such a downer post on the blog, but this is something we should know about. I was busy graduating from high school while one tribe in Africa set out to masacre their neighbors. Heavy stuff for a Wednesday. One line that strikes me in the documentary was from a US givernment official who said, "The US doesn't have friends. It only has interestes, and the US is not interested in Rwanda." If you are interested in learning more, this time line on the PBS Web site is a quick way to learn what happened.
