Camera Phone in Action

Barack Obama visited our campus yesterday. This is a photo of him signing his book. He gave a great speech. I have to give him credit. He is so popular nationwide that he has very little to gain by visiting a community college. We didn't pay him, and he didn't get much media exposure. I think he is trying to keep things in perspective and not get carried away from the Obama hype. It was a great opportunity for our students to hear him, and many took advantage of it.

I enjoyed this article about disco. When a fad is hot, everyone jumps in. When a fad is not, we make fun of it.

Going it alone...again. [posted by Troy]
I've been meaning to do some reading about the Kyoto Treaty which went into effect last week. Well, it went into effect last week in most of the world, just not in the US. It is a pretty interesting idea (a Carbon Revolution), where carbon pollution is sold in its own markets. Countries gain credits by helping other countries cut pollution or by cutting their own, and these credits can be sold to other nations who need them. It doesn't necessarily reduce the rate of pollution, but the treaty will hold the world at current levels (actually, they are shooting for 1990 target leveles).

The US was part of this treaty at one time, but Bush pulled us out saying it would be too expensive to join. (Which may indicate how much we really pollute.) However, there are some states that are ignoring the federal government and getting into the business of cutting emitions. Some business leaders fear that Europe is scoring all of the easy fixes to the problems, and once the US gets into the game, then we'll only have more expensive options. To be fair, the otherside argues that the treaty is unfair because the US has grown so much since 1990, and that costs are not equal. The problem remains that we pollute so much that we can't afford to stop. The rest of the world is behind, so they benefit from not polluting. Makes sense.
