Burning the Two Ended Candle I'm exhausted tonight. I won some passes to the Yukon Film Festival, so Joe and I have been trying to catch as many movies as possible for the last few nights. Trouble is, we always end up going to the late shows, because earlier we're running kids around. And that means late to bed and early to rise.
Must sees are: -Ryan, that just won an Oscar for best animated short film. It's an amazing piece of work. Run, walk or crawl, but do go see this! -Immortel (ad vitam), which is a French film based on the Nikopol-trilogy comic books by Enki Bilal. I am not familiar with the comic books, but will seek them out now. This movie was true poetry. It was done mixing real people with digital characters in a way that was a bit jarring at first but which really worked. The scenery was done in drab washed out colours, so there was a feeling throughout akin to a sinister painting. The movie is set in New York in 2095. The Egyptian gods have returned to dominate mankind and for reasons not really explained, the god Horus is allowed to return to earth for seven days before he is killed. He seeks out a mysterious woman with blue hair who cries blue tears to impregnate, as a way of insuring immortality.
We also saw Hukkle, a Hungarian film that begins and ends with a wrinkly old man sitting on a bench, hiccuping. It's the story of a rural town where it appears the women are killing off their men with belladonna. Some good moments, but it wasn't my cup of tea.
Tonight it's The Return, a Russian film about a father returning about a 10 year absence trying to re-connect with his two sons. I'm leaning towards not going and getting a decent night's sleep instead. We'll see how I feel in the next half hour.
