Vera Drake I went to see the movie 'Vera Drake' tonight, directed by Mike Leigh (same guy who did 'Secrets and Lies'). A wonderful, wonderful film that's set in the 1950s in England. It's about a gentle soul who performs abortions to help low-income women who have no other options, and ends up in jail for her efforts. Imelda Staunton, who plays the lead role of Vera, is brilliant. In fact all the actors are superb. I think the film won the Best Film Award at the Venice Film Festival this year, and I can certainly see why. I can't get it out of my mind, and it prompted a long discussion in the car on the way home between Iris and myself. Go see it if you can!

A Good One It was a good week-end of puttering about not doing much of anything. On Friday night I went to see a dance performance by Crystal Pite and Richard Siegal. It was a combination of theatre and dance and was quite intriguing. It never ceases to amaze me how some people can make their bodies do things that you'd never think possible. Joe and Jamie spent much of the week-end at the arena for the Native Hockey Tournament - Jamie's godfather was playing. I passed up going - sitting in a cold rink has never appealed to me and a hockey fan I am not. So I just stayed home and played piano, read, did a bit of housework and generally just relaxed. I find I'm into a 'chill' phase.....I took Friday off and am off again today and tomorrow, just to have some time to myself. I'm treating myself to a massage later today.
I'm afraid it would be all to easy to get used to this!
