Eve and the Fire Horse I went to see the film Eve and Fire Horse last night. What a wonderfully gentle and touching movie!
It's about a multi-generational Chinese family living in Vancouver, and explores the role of spirituality in their lives...both western and eastern spirituality. The two daughters are lovely...especially the younger one, who was born in the Year of the Fire Horse, notorious among Chinese families for producing the most troublesome children. I didn't see her as troublesome though -- just precocious.
After Christian missionaries visit the house, the daughters join a Sunday School class, and Catholic artifacts start to find their way into the Eng home, little crucifixes on the mantel next to the Buddha icons. There are wonderful scenes of Jesus and the Budda coming to life and dancing in the livingroom.
One of my favourite scenes was when the oldest daughter tries to convert a Sikh boy to Christianity as a way of saving her soul. I'm paraphrasing, but the conversation went something like this:
"I'm Sikh." "That's not your fault." "I'm not into Jesus." "But you can have everlasting life!" "No thanks."
While with adults, such opposing views can and have led to violence, the two children merely state their positions, shrug their shoulders, and leave it at that. Too precious! Here's the trailer in case you're interested. Do go see this film if you get a chance.
