Woof Woof, Meow, Meow, Bach, Bach Today is Bach's 321st birthday, and to mark the occasion, here is a story I heard recently about the power of Bach's music.
At an animal shelter in England, the staff decided to try a number of things to help calm the animals there. They dimmed the lights, played new age music, and even piped the sound of whales through the sound system. None of that seemed to do much good. Then they tried playing classical music to the animals, and they noticed a calming effect almost immediately.
The animals seemed to like Mozart. Beethoven was also a hit. But the music that seemed to sooth them the most was that of Bach.
This doesn't come as any great surprize to me. I have always found there to be something very uplifting and positive about his music. Performing it is something else - it is among some of the most difficult music to play. However in the listening category, it's hard not to believe in the goodness of all things after hearing Bach's music.
