At the Movies
Last night's movies - Water and Whole New Thing - were both wonderful. I'm sure you've heard a fair bit about Water, so I won't talk a great deal about it here. The director was in attendance, and it was fascinating hearing him talk about trying (and failing) to get Water filmed in India. Muslim fundamentalists would phone him at 2 in the morning threatening to rape and kill his women cast and crew members, and even though they had 300 soldiers guarding the set, they were eventually shut down. They came back to Canada broke and broken, ended up creating Bollywood/Hollywood (after their experience they felt the need to create something fun), and only after that managed to make arrangements to make Water in Sri Lanka. The main character, an eight year old girl, apparently came from a very small village and could not speak English nor Hindu, so she had to learn all her lines phonetically. She was amazing. The DVD comes out on March 8, along with the other two in the trilogy. Watch for them.

Now for Whole New Thing, a movie made in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. It's a funny and poignant coming of age story about a boy who falls in love with his male English teacher. This morning I can't get the film out of my head. Wonderful dialogue delivered wonderfully. There's a great scene where the dad is explaining to his son why masturbation is better than wet dreams. "Too much laundry is bad for the environment". The characters have flaws and failings, but they are loveable just the same.
