I saw them as I drove in to town tonight to do my grocery shopping: two white wolves, running side by side along the highway. They looked like they were laughing and teasing one another; sharing a joke perhaps. I slowed down, planning to pull over and watch their wonderful antics. But then I saw a transport truck coming barrelling towards them. I hoped they were far enough off the road to avoid getting hit, but no such luck. One of the wolves was caught under the truck's back wheels. After the truck had passed (it didn't even slow down) I saw what was left of the animal. The stump of one of its forearms was pointing upward as if to say, "Stop!" I saw the other wolf run panicking into the woods. I sat there for a long time, not knowing what to do. I had nothing in my car with which to cover or move the wolf. I left to buy some garbage bags, thinking I could use one to move the animal off the road. By the time I returned, there was no sign of either wolf, apart from the wet blood pooled on the road.
