CB Richard Ellis announced Tuesday it was acquiring Trammell Crow Co. for about $2.2 billion, creating the first commercial real estate firm to qualify for the Fortune 500.

Welcome to Florida. The state long touted for sun and cheap taxes has become a place where hundreds of thousands of winter residents pay disproportionately higher taxes than Floridians. Snowbirds who don't have children in local schools and who use government services only during winter months often pay four times more in property taxes than their neighbors who live year-round in virtually identical homes and condos. Residents of Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and other states often pay the largest share of taxes in resort communities, but they have no say in electing those who set their tax rates.
