As others have posted, I saw "Revenge of the Sith" at the Senator
on Thursday night. I still believe that the Senator Theater is
one of the best places to see such a movie. Of course, this is
without seeing it in its digital presentation. I did get to see
my share of nerds, which was funny.
For now, the trilogy that I started with in my childhood has
ended. I will admit to one thing: I was a little bit misty-eyed
at seeing the crawling text at the beginning of the movie. I
thought to myself that the movie franchise I adored as a child was now
ending. I thought about what it was like to see these movies as a
kid--how much fun I had. Others
have posted on how they disliked the film, but I have to admit that
these prequels will never replace how much I loved the original trilogy.
I liked the movie, and I enjoyed it immensely. It was good to see the
transformation that Anakin Skywalker undergoes to become Darth
Vader. It was also good to finally see how Emperor Palpatine gets
his "good looks." Finally, the movie just moved a lot better than
the last two prequels--there was no area in the movie where it
crawled. I have always been a great fan of the work John Williams
does with movie
soundtracks, with the Star Wars soundtracks being among his best. I think, though, that in "Revenge of the Sith,"
his music is great accompaniment to how dark the movie is. In
this film, you get the musical foreshadowing. I will actually be
purchasing the soundtrack later today.
Lot of folks have talked about the shoddy dialogue, but I must admit
that in looking back over the original trilogy, George Lucas has always
had a penchant for bad dialogue. I would argue that the dialogue
in the prequels has not been much greater than that in the original
trilogy. Consider the opening lines Darth Vader has in the
original Star Wars as proof of my argument.
Now, my final point is whether or not this is the "last" Star Wars film.
Personally, I have to agree with the sentiments of Roger Ebert.
The film franchise has been such a cash cow to Fox, I find it hard to
believe that they would let this end in such a way. Also, I find
it hard to believe that with Lucas being the perfectionist and
control-freak he is he would let the franchise end without the last
part of his vision coming to fruition. My prediction is that the
final trilogy will be written by Lucas, but the films--much like the
original trilogy--will mostly be directed by others.

I am generally feeling unmotivated today. Most of my big work is
done, and now it is on to smaller stuff: read this log, tweak this
script, test a migration with this user. Nothing exciting, but at
least the weekend was good.
- As I promised in Friday's post, I drank myself into a pretty nice
stupor. It started out innocently enough, and then the next thing
I know I was devouring a late-night cheesesteak. I apparently
enjoyed making sure everyone heard the same three stories 8
times. After the tail end of last week, I was entitled to that
evening's destruction of brain cell's.
- On Saturday, I spent the day with the family of my better half,
helping them at the summer retreat. It was fun. After that,
we went out for sushi and drinks to celebrate a friend's 30th
birthday. We also were able to enjoy a good time via my rather
inebriated friend's misadventures on in Preakness Infield.
- Sunday was a lazy day. I enjoyed some brunch at Mother's,
and then I enjoyed the rest of the day with company. We watched
Shrek 2 on HBO yesterday, and that acted as a not-so-subtle reminder of
a DVD I need to purchase. We ended the day with an invitation to
a tasty home-cooked dinner at my friend's place down the street.
At some point, I need to write up my thoughts on Revenge of the Sith.
