I had this dream last night.

I dreamed that I bought a pair of hip huggers (oops - now referred to as "low risers") so I could show off my new figure. I've lost fifteen pounds and am back down to my old bike racing weight. As a result, my fashion sense has changed a bit.

Anyhoo, I was so inspired by the dream that the Ski Boy and I went shopping for "low risers". We visited The Gap, Banana Republic, and Eddie Bauer and discovered an unfortunate new (actually very retro) fashion trend: Capri/Pedal Pusher length pants. Total ugh. Sooooo not me...Only Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy should be allowed to wear Capri pants.

Fortunately, Nordstrom's came to the rescue. We found a very spiffy pair of black brushed cottom low riser cargo pants that look totally sharp. The Ski Boy thinks they look very sexy. I am so excited!

So, the occasion for the wine of the night was a goodbye dinner for Brad Yeary. The Ski Boy and I took Brad to dinner at Sullivan's. Brad is off to a new job in Washington DC with Comcast. Brad is one of my best buddies of all time. I am really going to miss him.

And, how am I going to stay plugged into the gay culture without Brad?!

My personal favorite story along those lines occured two years ago - Brad and I were roommates. He was president of the Anchorage chapter of the Young Mens Gay Association and we hosted the Spring Cocktail party at my house. I was the only woman there. I had (still have) very short very blond hair. All the boys were very cute and I spent lots of time socializing. Finally, one of the very cute guys came up to me and said - "I just realized you are a woman. I thought you were a young gay male in 'transition.'"

I was so flattered: all the guys were so cute. And I was judged to also fit within the cute mold. And I was referred to as YOUNG! Not bad for 42 years old!

Anyhoo, I am really going to miss Brad. He is such a great guy! As I've said before, this is one of the pitfalls of living in Alaska. Good friends leave. Sometimes they come back. Sometimes they don't. It's a difficult part of living here.

Wine of the Night
An old Slat Rat/Ski Boy favorite: the 2000 Cline Ancient Vines Mourvedre. A wonderful big spicy, cherry wine that really needs to be paired with food. It is rare that I say this, but this is one wine that does not do that well on its own. It's big, sweet, spicy, and basically unruly. It needs food, big food like steak, as a moderating influence. But, with big food, it is a dynamite wine and real treat. Not your average bear of a wine.
