Extensibility is why SOAP is preferable over XML-PRC and RSS 1.0 over RSS 0.92, they are extensible in a non-centralized manner (using namespaces). For example, to syndicate information about time based events, RSS 1.0 allows to compose in the additional metadata wanted (and in fact, re-use some standard metadata defined by Dublin Core), whilst RSS 0.92 required getting the spec rev'd, and whilst there is now a RSS 0.93 spec, its appears to be pretty much dead in the water. I must add that extensibility comes at a price: complexity. So RSS 0.9.2 and XML-RPC are perfect for fast track development but could eventually lead to a brick wall...
