Drivel:  I took a break for lunch and was watching New England Cable News coverage of the Michael McDermott trial.  Michael McDermott is the man who went on a shooting spree at EdgeWater Technologies in Edgewater, MA, on December 26, 2000.  He just testified that he was on a mission from God to kill Hitler and six other Nazis in Berlin in 1940 in order to get a soul.  He believes he was born without a soul.  He claims a portal opened up in front of him and he was pulled through it into a bunker in Berlin in 1940.  He then started shooting people wearing Nazi arm bands.  He claims he is now in purgatory and that everything around him is a "construct" with the exception of the prosecutor, who he believes is an archangel.  He thinks he died in Berlin in 1940 in a police station after he killed Hitler and the Nazis.  This is one sick individual.  His demeanor is so cold and matter-of-fact.  What he is thinking is absolutely clear.  If you follow his train of reasoning, he thinks the prosecutor is an archangel sent by God to judge him.  He can't lie to the archangel or else he will go to hell.  He is absolutely telling the truth.  He is admitting to killing the people, the steps he took to prepare for his "mission", and everything else he did.  Going to heaven is the most important thing to him.  This guy is a lost cause and the case is clear.  The real question is how should he be sentenced.  Based on his testimony, being put to death would mean that he is being released from purgatory.  Life in prison would be equal to eternity in purgatory to him.  Then again, you have to wonder if that is what the defense wants to you believe.  Either way, limiting the money the state spends on this guy would be a good thing.  He is non-recoverable.  1:04:57 PM   comments ()
