Ricochet coming to a city near you?. Ricochet set to bounce back. After a brief appearance after the Sept. 11 attacks, the high-speed wireless service will soon get back to business in a number of cities. [CNET News.com]
What I wonder is whether Ricochet is an idea behind the times now that 802.11 wireless networks are providing the same kinds of connectivity for lower cost? [Mac Net Journal]
As a long time Ricochet user, I have been wondering the same question. But, I have yet to see 802.11 provide the same level of connectivity that Ricochet provided.
Until the Ricochet network shut down, I could drive just about anywhere in the Bay Area and maintain an Internet connection. I had a full-time Internet connection while commuting on the train from San Jose to San Francisco. I just don't see the patchwork of 802.11 networks providing this level of coverage.
Also, since Ricochet is providing the pipeline as well as the wireless connection, you are not going to run afoul of your isp for sharing their pipes.
If anything, I think that Ricochet is complementary technology to 802.11 that will expand wireless connections even further.
