A Military Career Distinguished Only By Favoritism

So the other day W said he'd "been to war." Here's more on his so-called career. The right used to call Clinton the draft-dodger in chief. Well, here we have nothing but a shirker and a chicken hawk, but the right seems to find that OK. I guess the true test of patriotism is sending other kids to die, not in risking your own life. The Wall Street Journal continues to mock John Kerry's experience in Vietnam, but leaves this phony alone.

From the beginning of his Presidential campaign, George W. Bush has forcefully and repeatedly insisted that he faithfully fulfilled all his military obligations by serving his time as a member of the Texas Air National Guard.

But the first independent investigation of Bush's military record by a former Air National Guard pilot has revealed the following:

Pilot George W. Bush did not simply "give up flying" with two years left to fly, as has been reported. Instead, Bush was suspended and grounded, very possibly as a direct or indirect result of substance abuse.

The crucial evidence -- a Flight Inquiry Board -- that would reveal the true reasons for Bush's suspension, as well as the punishment that was recommended, is missing from the records released so far. If no such Board was convened, this raises further questions ofextraordinary favoritism.

Contrary to Bush's emphatic statements and several published reports, Bush never actually reported in person for the last two years of his service -- in direct violation of two separate written orders. Moreover, the lack of punishment for this misconduct represents the crowning achievement of a military career distinguished only by favoritism.

Fox renews Simpsons through 2005, King of the Hill [The Vanguard Science Fiction Report]
Woo hoo! Though it sagged for a couple years, the last year or two of the Simpsons have been great. My daughter, born in '89, doesn't know a time without Simpsons, and I hate to think of what will happen to her when they're gone.

Why Are We Ruled by These Cretins? Department. The New Republic finds that it has grossly underestimated the mendacity of the Bush Administration: The New Republic Online: &c.: ...With all the attention focused on Condoleezza Rice's role in the Bush administration's affirmative action decision... the line, clearly favored by the administration, that Bush turned to Rice because of her experience as the provost of Stanford University during the 1990s. But a cynic might suspect she was included because she was known by the Bushies to oppose affirmative action,... [Semi-Daily Journal]

Well, just back from the march in San Francisco. Only a couple of comments: First, there were a lot of people there, almost every kind of person you're likely to see in the Bay Area was there. The sheer numbers and variety were really heartening.Sedond, George Bush is not a popular person around here. And that's a big understatement.
