Happy birthday Mac

Happy Birthday, Macintosh. 19 years ago today, on January 24, 1984, Apple introduced the Macintosh. [MacMegasite]
Holy shit, but that's a long time. I had my first Mac in early March after that; I was selling computers in a store then, and Apple gave us a deal. Some interesting other memories: my son Richard was born a couple weeks later, in early February. My co-workers and I had a joke that I was going to name him "Little Mac." I have a couple of pretty close friends that go back then, and further: Roger and Eric. And my pal Bob, I remember first really getting to know at Macintosh sales training. I've been through a bunch of Mac since then: 128K original, Mac Plus, SE 30, IIx, Quadra 650, a PowerPC model whose name I can't remember now, one of the clones, an original iMac,and the current one, the 450 MHz slotloading iMac with DVD (I don't know what else to call it). I may be missing one or two, too.

Life imitating Mandy Patinkin

Memorable thoughts from Jason Leopold

To prove this point, go back to December 1999 when Bush was still governor of Texas and wasn't even the Republican candidate for president yet. Back then, Bush Jr. had said that if elected president he would use military force to "take out" Hussein and Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction. Bush said publicly last year that Saddam Hussein tried to kill his father, George H. W. Bush, when he was president a decade ago as if that should be reason enough to attack Iraq. But Bush still can't prove that Iraq poses a threat to the United States.

Memorable dialogue from The Princess Bride

Inigo Montoya: Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father: prepare to die. Now, offer me money.
[slices Count Rugen's cheek]
Count Rugen: Yes.
Inigo Montoya: Power too. Promise me that.
[slices Count Rugen's other cheek]
Count Rugen: All that I have and more. Please...
Inigo Montoya: Offer me everything I ask for.
Count Rugen: Any thing you want.
Inigo Montoya: I want my father back, you son of bitch.
[stabs and kills Count Rugan]

The Internet Science Fiction Data Base needs a new home. [ via Lawrence Person ] Because of the number of queries handled each day, the Internet Science Fict [More Like This WebLog]

The point isn't that we need donations - the point is that the concept of a large, heavily-used, non-commercial database doesn't fit in well with the way the Internet has evolved. We've tried running at numerous sites over the last 7 years, and all have imposed various restrictions that have eventually prevented the ISFDB from running there.

Constance Adams, Space Architect. Constance Adams, Space Architect She designed the International Space Station's TransHab module (a prototype for manned Mars missions), and says cool things about what the role of architecture is: "Architecture involves forming harmony around the human system, balancing culture, biology, planetary knowledge and technology in counterpoint to the unknowable."
