The Dice Man [allconsuming.net]
Ha! Nice to see this one mentioned; I should get a copy and reread it; it's years and years since I read it. It's the story of a guy who gives his entire life, every decision, over to the roll of the dice. Bizarre, twisted, compelling, disturbing; a unique book.

Country Joe's Rag. Fixin'to Die after all these years Woodstock-era protest singer Country Joe McDonald still keeps an active pulse on today's events on his website. One of what eventually came to be perhaps his most famous song, the "I-Feel-Like-Fixin'-to-Die rag" has taken new life in light of current events, which is quite simple to deduct: just substitute all the Vietnam references with "Iraq" and there you have it - as many people have been happy to do by submitting their own lyrics versions to the site, somehow confirming that the world actually hasn't changed much in that respect 30 years after Vietnam... Bush Hubris Watch. Check out some of the reality behind Bush's fuzzy numbers from last night... [OliverWillis.com]
Must read. Smoke and mirrors. Bait and switch. I heard someone saying the other night that with Bush's low poll numbers, the Democratic nomination might be worth having. But the job itself in 2005 will be very very difficult. This bunch is digging us into an economic, moral, diplomatic hole that will be very difficult to get out of.

Odds are against finding Earth-like planets [FARK]
I bet so. But though our sample size is growing (it was just 1 not too long ago), it's still small. The only planets we see now are the large ones and those in really eccentric orbits.

Bait and Switch. Behind the veil of President Bush's rhetoric is a Darwinian political philosophy that, if clearly understood, would repel the majority of Americans. By Bob Herbert. [New York Times: Opinion] Must read! The speech was just, as they say here, bait and switch. For example, Bush talked movingly about AIDS, and it sounded real good, but then you remember that the administration is insisting that AIDS literature doesn't mention condoms. He makes this stuff sound good, but all the time, there's a right-wing ideology operating with its own hidden, really hidden, agenda.

Forgotten Friends. After a decade of abandoning grievances, opting for democracy and drawing closer to the United States, Latin America has been forgotten by the Bush administration. By Enrique Krauze. [New York Times: Opinion]
Of course, Latin America is too far away from Iraq; it can't help us there. The only place we're paying any attention to is Venezuela, because there's oil thar.
