Justice Has Been Done for the Skaters
It was just the good and right thing to do.
Tonight an unpresidented move by the ISU, at the urging of the IOC and the public, Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada were finally awarded the Gold Medal in Pairs Skating.
The Gold Medal title will be shared equally by Sale and Pelletier, and Russia's Elayna Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze.
"It was the only fair way to resolve the situation and I am really pleased with the outcome." said Olympic Gold Medalist, Jayne Torville
"Under the circumstances it was the right decision to award a second gold medal to Jamie Sale and David Pelletier." said Brian Cousins, Olympic Gold Medalist.
However there were a couple interesting things that happened that may have escaped the public's eye--
-
Neither Pairs Teams will ever get their Gold Medals mixed up. It appears the Gold Medals awarded to Sale and Pelletier had a slightly different design than the Russian Pairs team. The design appeared to be a model of "Strength" from the Greek statue Olympus.
-
ISU President, Ottavio "Speedy" Cinquanta was dispatched to present the medals and do the right thing, by none other than current IOC President Dr. Jack Rogge, and former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.
From where I sat tonight, both teams were warmly received by the audience during the ceremony where both national athems were played.
“We’re only figure skaters. We love the sport, and we wanted to be true sportsmen. I hope we gave a good example for all the kids watching tonight.” said David Pelletier after the ceremony. Jamie, Elayna Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze all nodded in agreement.
From your mouth, David, to God's ear.
When the IOC meets to select the Olympian of the Year/Games, I do hope they seriously look at the behavior and conduct of these Pairs Teams. They could teach everyone a lesson about grace and class under pressure.
Now let's get on with it.
