Windows is CraXP
So let's dish it out to the other side. I am a big fan of Apple and the Mac. That doesn't mean I'm goign to avoid some tough lovin' at times. I also have a PC and just recently had the pleasure of upgrading it to XP Pro. I didn't pay full price for the software since I have a friend who works for MS, and we made the trip to the company store. To be honest, I got a $199 upgrade for $20.
It installed just fine. The basic drivers worked and I went and installed the updated drivers from the hardware companies. All worked fine. Then I made the mistake of using it...
One of the reasons I moved to craXP was because it offers real "user accounts." What I found was that this is not in fact the truth. I installed Age of Empires II and the expansion pack for AOE. When my son logged into his user account, the program would crash (yes, it is the latest version). So I had to let him into my adminstrator account to be able to play. THIS MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL. My step-daughters boyfriend has an account on the machine. He bought Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. We installed it. It will not run unless he has administrator rights. It even says so in the documentation.
I am not going to waste the time going over what I had to do to uninstall it and how it will not let me do a fresh install, no it always wants to "Modify", "Repair", or "Uninstall" my previous installation that has already been removed. I am sure that this is either: a. my problem because this is the way it works, or b. an issue with the registry, which does not get cleaned in the uninstall process.
Why have a secure OS with User accounts if you have to open up the machine to allow someone to run a program that should run for any normal limited account. What's the point? And to think that Microsoft can not even get it right with one of their own games (AOE II).
Ahh, computers...where's the hammer when you really need it...mj
