Real Public Radio

The Doc Searls Weblog -> Real Public Radio.

It occurred to me this morning that I don't listen to NPR much any more. When I'm making my morning coffeein the kitchen, I'd rather listen to an audio reading off any number of blogs. And I'm thinking that maybe this is what we really need out of Internet radio. Maybe talk is the ticket, more than music.

We certainly have plenty of sources.

MP3 players that plug directly into USB slot

Gizmodo -> The MP3 player with no name.

duex_m.jpgPretty funny review of two flash MP3 players that plug directly into a USB slot for file transfer, the Nomad MuVo from Creative and another player that the reviewer admits he doesn't even know the name of. Which is a shame, since he seems to like the nameless player a lot more than the MuVo, which he trashes. Apparently the manual just says "MP3 Player", and the box says "Digital Audio Player" on it. A quick check of the Gizmodo archives reveals that the player in question is the Innogear Micro MP3 player (pictured at right), which we wrote about last November.

Andromedia storage and narrowcasting

Marc's Voice -> Andromeda storage and narrowcasting.

Scott Matthews & George ClintonScott Mathews' Andromeda just got a great write-up in About.com.  Andromeda is both a storage and narrowcasting system.

Andromeda is NOT about stealing copyrighted material, as much as a servcie for bands and creative folks to use the web to store and distribute their stuff on-line.  Sort of like a combination of MP3.com and Shoutcast.

Right on to Scott!  Here he is with George Clinton.

BoeBlogging

80211b News -> You believe a tech writer can fly (and Wi-Fi): Pete Lewis of Fortune files from the air in a 737 configured by Boeing to show off their in-flight, high-speed Connexion service which offers wired (business/first class) and wireless (everywhere on the plane, one assumes) Internet access while flying. The service is currently only available on a single Frankfurt-D.C. Lufthansa flight, but a bigger rollout is expected. As far as in-flight technology goes, being able to charge a flat rate ($15 to $35 is expected depending on the flight's duration) coupled with a relatively simple set up (not as complicated as interactive video, that's for sure) could make this service actually profitable. I know that on a 4 to 10-hour flight, I'd happily pony up the money if I really thought I needed to work. Thirty to 60 minutes of work pays back a $15 to $35 tab depending on what's on the agenda. Continuous access at the flat rate and the relatively high speed (5 Mbps down) makes it a no-brainer for most business people--who will probably press for subscription service with discounts.
