ACER laptops for Chicago Public School Was there an option for Apple Powerbooks and Ibooks, which are superior machilnes and for what they do is a better value. This is the kind of short sighted thinking that infects large organizations. Apple portables are the best multimedia machine available. I got three words for CPS. -Firewire, Airport, Bluetooth. The technology coordinators should get a PowerBook with Connectix Emultion software to run Windows on the Powerbook. The "sharp" techies use Powerbooks so that they can troubleshoot both Mac and PC's on a network.

Sometimes folks think that saving money is done by buying an ACER when a machine that is just better built is a better value in the long run. Return on investment. Time will tell.

Mining Essential K-log stuff I have begun mining information about K-logs. Phillp Wolff quotes Gerry McGovern on his study of a Mckinsey Study on Knowledge Management. Wolff says that according to Mckinsey, motivation is more important than technology. It is DESIRE that is the key! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/klogs/message/95
If you want to be successful at knowledge management you must do three things:

1. Foster a desire within people to gather knowledge

2. Foster a desire within people to create knowledge

3. Foster a desire within people to share knowledge

Organizations who fail at knowledge management tend to:

1. See knowledge as something that primarily flows from the top down

2. Implement technology solutions and wait

3. Fail to address human attitudes which see hoarding knowledge as a route to power

I think we can check off on all the above for the conditions that exist in Chicago Public Schools. CPS technologists we have to DYI.
