Most of the pretty fall-colored trees we see in this part
of California are non-native. The plant in
this photo is by far the most impressive-looking common
fall-colored plant in Santa Cruz County. It's poison oak.
For years, I have intended to take an Oak survey of
our neighborhood. And now that Sudden Oak Death is a
prevalent pathogen, it has become more urgent.
My neighborhood has some of the biggest, oldest, and
coolest looking Coast Live Oaks I've ever seen anywhere.
This specimen near the bottom of the hill is one of the
best.
As yesterday's rainstorm approached, we decided to postpone the Big Sur backpacking trip.
Hope to find a clear weekend next month.
