Barnraising for the National Museum in Iraq

Doc Searls wants to help rebuild the museum:

Proposed: A barn-raising for civilization.

Anakkadian.gif art historian and archaeologist on The Connection (which I'm listening to live right now, thanks to a pointer from Dave), just called the sacking of Baghdad's museums The greatest catastrophe ever to befall a cultural institution in the history of the world.

More than the burning of the library in Alexandria? This guy is in a position to know. Long after everything else from this war is forgotten, this is the one thing that everybody will remember, he says.

Well, I'm thinking, we're part of civilization, too, presumably ? "we" being everybody in the world who goes to the trouble of making it better.

So here's an idea for the U.S. and British governments, for Coalition Forces, for anybody else in a position of authority in Iraq right now ? plus the rest of us who care:

  1. Devote one TV and one radio station in Baghdad entirely to the recovery of its antiquities. Staff it with concerned Iraqi citizens, and put scholars on the air, where they can talk about (and show, if photos are available) these stolen artifacts and their importance to Iraqi and world culture. Do this by re-puposing old stations if they're available, or by creating whole new ones. There's plenty of equipment available. Commercial broadcasters in the U.S. shed old gear all the time. They could easily make tax-deductible donations of studio and transmitting equipment, and would be proud to brag about it on the air too, I'm sure.
  2. Create an .iq (isn't that a perfect country code... .IQ!) Web site devoted entirely to aggregating and displaying photographs of Baghdad museum properties, and of lost or damaged Iraqi antiquities. Perhaps the British Museum (which has already pledged help) or British Petroleum (its Web site sponsor) could run this thing ? or fund somebody else willing to run the thing. Doesn't matter as long as it gets done.
  3. The rest of us should start aggregating (or choose the appropriate verb) cultureblogging around the same issue.

It's barn-raising time for civilization, folks. Smart Mob Rulez at their best. Hunting down bad guys and offering cash rewards might be necessary moves, but they're highly insufficient. Let's do something sustained and positive to help the Iraqi people ? and the rest of civilization ? get back what's been lost.

2003 Denver Mayoral Election

Penfield Tate has raised the hackles of some DPS folks with some of his campaign literature. Critics claim that he is implying that the mayor can effect school board policy when the office does not have direct authority. Tate says, "Because of my commitment to kids and families in our public schools, I'm going to give them a partnership they would have only dreamed about in the past."

Ari Zavaras' TV ads are the subject of an article in the Rocky Mountain News. He shows up all over town, speaking as a reporter, discussing election issues. From the article, "Zavaras and John Hickenlooper are the only mayoral candidates to hit the airwaves with TV campaign ads. Don Mares and Tate said they are planning ads." Zavaras has posted the ads on his website for your viewing pleasure. Thank you from all us "netizens." Update: The Zavaras ads do not play on my Mac. Bad show. Hickenlooper wants to include everyone so his ads are in three formats on his website. Zavaras only cares about Windows users. Are you listening Don Mares and Penfield Tate? Zavaras?

Here's a short article about Susan Casey and Ari Zavaras. Casey charges that there will be no change in the running of the Police Department if Zavaras is elected.

Don Mares was at Kennedy High School talking to students as reported by Denver Student Voices. From the article, "When asked if Mares would be using negative campaign advertising as part of his strategy, he said he would not. He noted that he wants his constituents to know about him and not about the negative traits of his opponents."

2003 Denver Municipal Election

The voters have a decision to make on a ballot issue May 6th for Denver Health (1A) according to the Rocky Mountain News. The article details some of the needs at the hospital. The Rocky also has a short synopsis of the ballot issue. Here's a link to the Rocky editorial in support of 1A.

The Denver Post is running short columns titled "Election Watch." Here are the links for Tuesday and today.

Here's the link to today's The Stump from the Rocky Mountain News.
