Denver November 2004 Election
There is a bit of acrimony and turmoil on the Republican side of the primary election, according to the Rocky Mountain News [April 9, 2004, "Schaffer camp angry"]. Mr. Schaffer felt that he had lined up Govenor Owens' endorsement but now that Peter Coors seems poised to enter the race the gov is waffling.
Here's a look at Ken Salazar and John Salazar from the Rocky Mountain News [April 9, 2004, "Salazars are valley-forged"]. Ken is running for the U.S. Senate while his brother John is seeking the 3rd District seat in the House of Representatives. The brothers grew up in rural Colorado's San Luis Valley. From the article, "It is the irresistible stuff of incipient legend: Two brothers, two maiden bids for national office. A revered matriarch. A large family with Colorado roots preceding statehood. The undeniable significance of ethnicity. 'The Colorado Kennedys,' political analyst Eric Sondermann calls them. LeRoy Salazar, Ken's and John's older brother, shakes his head in emphatic denial. His family, he says, couldn't be further from the Kennedys. For one thing, Salazars had already been in North America for more than two centuries by the time the Kennedy ancestors finally wandered over from Ireland, made a quick fortune and almost as quickly parlayed themselves into the social stratosphere. 'The Kennedys,' LeRoy Salazar mused, gazing through his picture window at the fat Limousin-Angus cattle he raises holistically in the valley, 'are not country folks.'"
The Rocky is also profiling Peter Coors through the eyes of his mother today [April 9, 2004, "Mama Coors pours heart out about son"]. From the article, "Holly Coors and other members of the closely knit Coors clan said that Peter Coors wanted to wait until after the Easter weekend to make any announcement. But on Wednesday, after Gov. Bill Owens told reporters that Coors called to say he was entering the Senate race, not even Coors' mother was able to stay completely mum."
