Denver November 2004 Election
After just a week in the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, Peter Coors has raised nearly as much money as his primary opponent, Bob Schaffer, according to the Rocky Mountain News [April 20, 2004, "Coors raises $125,000 at lunch"]. From the article, "Both the Schaffer and Salazar campaigns said they expected Coors to raise a lot of money. They also expect to beat him, based on better field organizations. Schaffer's spokeswoman, Elizabeth Blackney, said the former congressman raised $10,000 a day in his first week campaigning, though he had no formal campaign team. Coors' fund raising, she said, 'doesn't affect our equation one bit'...Salazar's campaign manager, Jim Carpenter, said he always expected the GOP nominee would outspend Salazar in a general election. And he said Coors' $125,000 lunch didn't surprise him."
Ken Salazar and 38 other states attorneys general have signed a letter criticizing President Bush's policies in exempting the Department of Defense from environmental regulations, according to the Rocky Mountain News [April 20, 2004, "Taking on the Pentagon"]. From the article, "Releasing the Pentagon from the tapestry of ecological protections could hobble cleanup work at several current and former military sites in Colorado, Salazar said, including the former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and the Pueblo Chemical Depot...The administration argues environmental laws can interfere with the military's ability to train troops in an era of heightened national security concerns. Additionally, the military and Colorado's state health department disputed Salazar's interpretation of the proposed amendments, suggesting that revised laws wouldn't shield the military from responsibility at inactive sites, such as the Lowry bombing range or the arsenal."
Update: The Races That Matter: A Series Until Election Day. The Kos intends to follow CO-6 (Tom Tancredo and Joanna Conti) along with the Colorado Senate race (Ken Salazar vs Bob Schaffer or Peter Coors).
