Denver November 2004 Election

Police shootings are becoming an issue in the campaign for Denver District Attorney, according to the Denver Post [April 16, 2004, "Shootings by police an issue in DA's race"]. From the article, "(Mitch) Morrissey is one of several prosecutors who respond to police shootings in Denver. He said he likes the current decision-making process in the district attorney's office for police shootings. Under that system, the district attorney decides whether to file charges against an officer in a police shooting...John Walsh, a former federal prosecutor, says that in some police-shooting cases, the Denver district attorney should be disqualified and outside prosecutors brought in. But like Morrissey, Walsh said he will utilize the current system to make the vast majority of police- shooting decisions...Candidate Beth McCann also likes the way police shootings are investigated. She said that as soon as there is a police shooting, the internal investigation begins. Responding to the scene are officers from the police homicide and internal affairs bureaus and representatives from the district attorney and safety manager's offices."

Here's a link to a post on police shootings from John Walsh's weblog and a police policy statement from Mitch Morrisey's website.

Ken Salazar has raised over $500,000 so far in his run for a seat in the U.S. Senate from Colorado, according to the Denver Post [April 16, 2004, "Salazar donors trump Schaffer's"]. From the article, "Large Colorado contributors included former Denver mayors Federico Peña and Wellington Webb, and Bill Coors, Peter Coors' uncle." Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [April 16, 2004, "Colorado's candidates raise a cool $2.5 million"].

Here's an article about Peter Coors from the Cortez Journal.

Denver voters may get an opportunity to raise the state tax on cigarettes, according to Westword. From the article, "Under the proposal, 46 percent of the funds will be earmarked to insure children and pregnant women. Today, 39 percent of low-income children in Colorado do not have health insurance -- neither private, nor publicly funded Medicaid coverage -- and 5 percent of pregnant women in the state receive virtually no prenatal care, putting their children at risk of low birth weight and serious medical complications."

Peter Coors agrees with Archbishop Chaput's challenge to Catholic politicians about being pro-choice, according to the Denver Post [April 16, 2004, "Coors backs Chaput's challenge to Catholic politicians"]. From the article, "Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar, the Democratic Senate front-runner, supports the death penalty and abortion rights. Salazar, a lifelong Catholic, said Wednesday abortion is a question to be settled 'between a woman and her God.' He also said he does not think it's up to the archbishop to create litmus tests to determine who is Catholic." Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [April 16, 2004, "Salazar: Chaput over line"].

Colorado Water

Colorado Springs has joined Denver and Aurora in imposing strict watering rules for the upcoming summer, according to the Denver Post [April 16, 2004, "Thirsty Springs sets water limits"]. From the article, "Colorado Springs residents may use sprinklers twice a week to water their lawns under a water restriction policy that is generally unchanged from last summer. Restrictions start Thursday. Storage levels in reservoirs were at 53.6 percent this week - better than last year - but well below the normal level of 77 percent for this time of year."
