Denver November 2004 Election

Ken Salazar has raised $425,000 in three weeks, according to the Denver Post [March 31, 2004, "Salazar's coffers for Senate race hit $425,000"]. From the article, "The Colorado contest is getting national attention because it could change the makeup of the Senate. Republicans have a 51-48 edge, with one independent who leans Democratic...The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has given Salazar $34,000, and several political action committees, including labor groups, have donated. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and former Mayor Wellington Webb have helped raise money for the attorney general. In addition to fundraising events, the campaign has also sent a mailing to past Salazar contributors. A number of high-profile Hispanic leaders also have thrown their support behind Salazar, including New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Henry Cisneros, former mayor of San Antonio and former secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Clinton. Salazar has also met with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in Washington, receiving a promise from the group to help him raise money."

Peter Blake talks about the the Republicans courting Dave Liniger for the U.S. Senate race in his column in today's Rocky Mountain News [March 31, 2004, "Blake: The money-go-round"]. He also mentions that Ken Salazar and John Salazar are doing joing fundraisers. Hollie Velasquez is managing the fundraising for Ken Salazar's campaign. A year ago she was trying her best to get Don Mares elected mayor of Denver.

2004 Presidential Election

Republican conservatives are not speaking with one voice about the proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, according to the Rocky Mountain News [March 31, 2004, "Conservative opposes Musgrave plan"]. From the article, "Former Georgia GOP congressman Bob Barr told a House Judiciary subcommittee that he opposes an amendment proposed by two Colorado Republicans, Sen. Wayne Allard and Rep. Marilyn Musgrave. In Barr's view, it would violate states' rights, 'cheapen' the constitution and open the document to 'meddling' by both ends of the political spectrum . . . Tuesday's testimony shows how the same-sex marriage debate has caused a philosophical split within the Republican camp. Conservatives must balance deeply held principles supporting traditional family values while also defending states rights under the federalist system."

The big news today is that Condoleezza Rice will testify under oath to the 9/11 commission. Josh Marshall asks, What if Condi Rice, when she testifies, makes statements in flat contradiction of earlier statements by Richard Clarke? Supporters of the administration think that, The Dope is roped.

Update: According to the Daily Kos John Kerry is trailing President Bush 40 to 46 in Pennsylvania.
