Denver November 2004 Election

The Democrats are jostling for position to get the nomination for the soon vacant Senate seat here in Colorado. Meanwhile it looks like the Republicans are hoping that Governor Owens will get in, according to the Rocky Mountain News [March 8, 2004, "Party showdown likely in Senate bid"]. From the article, "'With Ken Salazar, I think everyone believes he would clear the (Democratic) field of everybody except minor candidates,' said a Democratic source speaking on condition of anonymity. 'People feel like he is the strongest Democrat that the Democrats have to run.' Salazar told The Pueblo Chieftain newspaper last week: 'Yes, I'm considering the Senate.' 'My thought is, I should think about it and reach a quick decision. I expect by the early part of next week to decide if I definitely will go for it or not,' Salazar said. Under one scenario, if Udall or other candidates entered the Senate field and a contentious primary appeared imminent, Salazar might decide to run and prompt the others to reconsider. Some Democrats have called for would-be candidates to make a decision by Tuesday. Gates said he would like to have the party's field set by Friday, before Democratic gatherings scheduled for Saturday. 'We're all big boys and girls, and if we're going to have a primary, fine,' (Chris) Gates said. 'I understand. It's just that sooner or later, Democratic voters need to know what their field is going to look like.' And so do Republicans. Besides Owens, possible candidates include Reps. Bob Beauprez, Scott McInnis, Tom Tancredo and Marilyn Musgrave, and State Treasurer Mike Coffman."

2004 Presidential Election

Here's some information about a recent Zogby poll looking at electoral votes for November's presidential election from Taegan Goddard. John Kerry "is ahead in 18 of the so-called Blue states (including the District of Columbia), representing some 226 electoral votes. President Bush leads in 21 of the Red states, with 176 electoral votes. A dozen more states, with 136 electoral votes, are considered in play."

Here's a post from the Daily Kos about poll numbers in Florida. Florida is shaping up to be a battleground state in November. John Kerry is leading President Bush in a Miami Herald poll (49 to 43) and an American Research Group poll (45 to 44).

National Polls are interesting to watch, although they have little relevance when one is counting electoral votes. John Kerry and President Bush are neck and neck (44 to 44) in this Fox News poll.
