Denver November 2004 Election

A picture named bennighthorsecampbell.jpg Here's the coverage of Ben Nighthorse Campbell's surprising announcement that he is pulling out of the U.S. Senate race from Colorado, from the Denver Post [March 4, 2004, "Campbell calls an end to 12-year Senate ride"]. From the article, "Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, who in recent weeks saw his presumed cruise to re-election rocked by health problems, an ethics investigation and the unexpected candidacy of a wealthy Democratic challenger, said Wednesday that he has quit the race. Campbell attributed his decision not to stand for re-election to recent bouts of ill health, after making two brief trips to the hospital in the past week. His announcement capped a colorful career of 22 years in elected office and jolted the state and national political landscape...Campbell's announcement startled the political community, sending potential candidates from both parties scurrying to assemble their advisers, consult with fundraisers and assess the race. Gov. Bill Owens led the list of possible contenders. But almost every member of the state's congressional delegation was said to be a potential candidate as well, including Democratic Reps. Mark Udall of Eldorado Springs and Diana DeGette of Denver; and Republican Reps. Scott McInnis of Grand Junction, Tom Tancredo of Littleton, Marilyn Musgrave of Fort Morgan and Bob Beauprez of Arvada...With Campbell's announcement, the Colorado Senate race jumped to the top tier of contests that will decide the fate of who controls the Senate. For the Democrats, who must defend a number of open seats themselves, Colorado now represents a crucial opportunity."

Here's a story about everyone lining up to run now and how it will effect the Colorado congressional delegation and state elected offices from the Denver Post [March 4, 2004, "Big-name politicians consider joining race"]. Health, family and decreased enthusiasm are the reasons for Campbell quitting, according to the Denver Post [March 4, 2004, "Health issue, stress faded campaign enthusiasm"].

What of the Senator's accomplishments while in office? Here's a story from the Denver Post [March 4, 2004, "Friends, foes recollect charismatic politician, independent thinker"] and another [March 4, 2004, "Big image begot few major bills"].
