Colorado Water
Southwestern Colorado is awash in snowpack, according to the Rocky Mountain News [February 7, 2005, "Southwest Colorado leads in wet weather"]. From the article, "The snowpack for the basin made up by the San Miguel, Dolores, Animas and San Juan rivers was 153 percent of the 30-year average as of Sunday. The rest of the state was 111 percent with three basins important to the populous Front Range all below 100 percent. The snowpack was 20 percent greater than on the same date last year. As of Sunday, the Upper Colorado was 98 percent, Laramie and North Platte 90 percent, and South Platte 87 percent."
U.S. Representative John Salazar is pushing Matt Smith for nomination to the Department of the Interior's top water job, according to the Rocky Mountain News [February 7, 2005, "Smith, a Republican who served eight years in the Colorado House, narrowly lost the GOP primary last year to Greg Walcher. Salazar won the general election. Two years ago, Smith and Salazar teamed up to lead the fight against Referendum A, a water-bonding proposal backed by Gov. Bill Owens and Walcher, then the director of the state Department of Natural Resources. When voters statewide defeated Referendum A by a wide margin, it helped propel Salazar and Smith into statewide notice and helped launch their respective congressional campaigns."
