Denver May 2005 Election
The new justice center is officially on the ballot, according to the Rocky Mountain News [Feberuary 15, 2005, "Voters to rule on jail"]. From the article, "The (Denver City) council voted 13-0 to place the measure on the May 3 ballot as several members publicly endorsed the construction of a proposed new jail and criminal court facilities near the Civic Center."
Opponents and proponents of the new justice center are set to to battle, according to the Denver Post [February 15, 2005, "Denver jail foes, backers to launch campaigns"]. From the article, "Proponents, including most of Denver's elected officials, argue that the city needs the proposed $378 million project to ease crowding at its existing jails. Opponents question whether the city has focused enough effort on alternative programs - such as drug treatment and home-based, electronic monitoring - to keep people out of jail. The opposition campaign intends to publicly outline its plans as early as today. The supporters have targeted Wednesday."
Denver has not acquired all of the land for the proposed new justice center according to the Denver Post [February 15, 2005, "Denver jail land swap proposed"]. From the article, "To build a justice center on the 500 block of West Colfax Avenue, Denver must complete land deals - including options, sales and swaps - with six owners. The city estimates it could cost more than $13 million to acquire the block, now filled with two parking lots, a post office, a restaurant, an auto-repair shop and an adjacent garage. The block must be acquired if Denver is to build the $378 million complex composed of a courthouse, jail and parking garage. Of the block's owners, Richard 'Buzz' Geller is the only one likely to secure a deal that will shape downtown significantly."
Maybe they can sell the naming rights.
