Social Security
If enough people would respond to NewMexiKen's suggestion to help the U.S. pay off debt the President might be able to avoid defaulting on the T-Bills held by the Social Security Trust Fund.
Yesterday Josh Marshall asked some questions of the Greenspan Commission on Social Security. Today he has some answers.
Here's a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll with some results on Social Security opinion.
Update: Josh Marshall: "Regardless of what rate of return one estimates for private accounts over the longterm, in the real world, the rate of return is not a straight line. There are long bull markets, long bear markets, as well as sudden shifts in the stock market in one direction or another."

Denver May 2005 Election
The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that Denver officials may have embellished the statistics from the courthouse to make the case for a new Justice Center [February 10, 2005, "Courthouse stats unclear"]. From the article, "Both project manager James Mejia and Mayor John Hickenlooper have said 35 incidents in 2004 underscore the need for a new courthouse to go along with a new downtown jail. They have pointed to problems in the City Hall corridors where shackled inmates mix with ordinary citizens there to do city business. A review of sheriff's department incident reports requested by the Rocky Mountain News shows that most occurred in courtrooms and holding cells, not the corridors. Six were medical emergencies not involving violence or intentionally disruptive behavior. And three of the cited incidents did not involve defendants. Further, the actual number of alleged incidents is unclear. This week, the sheriff's office produced 31 incidents to the News, not the 35 mentioned earlier by city officials."
The Rocky is picking nits here. Overcrowding in the Jails and the resulting danger to inmates and staff is the primary issue here not the issue of confrontations at the City and County Building. Sheesh.
