Josh Marshall: "In both cases, the misinformation or lies continue to cycle through the echo chamber, apparently with no penalty for their falsehood or attempt to correct."

Dan Gillmor: "Google is starting to act in ways that are reminiscent of our favorite monopolist. As Dave Winer observes, this is near enough to changing Web content as to be worrisome."

Mayoral Weblog
Jerry Brown update from Dan Gillmor. He writes, "His first posting, about a city curfew policy, is also a letter to the editor in today's San Francisco Chronicle." The cool part is that Brown probably published first and his feed was picked up by the paper.

Peggy Noonan: "When you hear name-calling like what we've been hearing from the elite media this week, you know someone must be doing something right. The hysterical edge makes you wonder if writers for newspapers and magazines and professors in J-schools don't have a serious case of freedom envy."
Thanks to Dave Winer for the link.

Denver May 2005 Election
City officials began their official push to get approval for the new justice center Wednesday, according to the Rocky Mountain News [February 17, 2005, "Justice center pitched on safety"]. From the article: Officials say the new center will reduce potential harm that citizens now face in the hallways of the City and County Building and to sheriff's deputies in existing city jails. Both are key issues that will resonate with voters, they say. If approved, a new 1,500-bed jail and criminal courthouse will be built two blocks west of the City and County Building. Other facilities will be built at the existing county jail site on Smith Road. Even most activists who oppose the center agree on one key point: The city's current jail conditions are dilapidated and overcrowded. They disagree on how to fix the problem. Hickenlooper announced co- chairs to the pro-center committee on Wednesday. They are: Frances Koncilja, an attorney; Christine Johnson, president of the Community College of Denver; Richard Scharf, president of the Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau; and the Rev. Reginald Holmes, pastor of the New Covenant Christian Church."
Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [February 17, 2005, "Committee named in push for new jail"]. From the article: "Several groups are mounting an opposition campaign - titled the Campaign for Effective Jail Alternatives - to be unveiled as early as next week. They argue that the justice-center proposal is too large and expensive, and that the city should focus more on diversion and treatment programs."

Iraqi Election
AP (via the Rocky): "Electoral Commission official Adel al-Lami said results from the landmark Jan. 30 election would be announced at a press conference in Baghdad on Thursday."
Update: Juan Cole: "The Iraqi Electoral Commission confirmed on Thursday the projection I reported here last Monday, that the United Iraqi Alliance or the Shiite religious parties have a 51 percent majority of seats in the new Iraqi parliament. They have 140 seats out of 275."
Update: Juan Cole: "Al-Hayat [Arabic link] has printed the number of seats won by all the small parties in the Iraqi elections. The total number of seats is 275. What it shows is that the religious Shiites easily have a majority if they pull in a few small parties. I count 6 obvious Shiite seats that could be picked up by the UIA for most votes important to religious Shiites. That would give them 50.5 percent of the vote. They'd just need one or two other independents to win most votes."
