Colorado Water
Count the Denver Post editorial staff amongst the supporters of HB 1177 [February 20, 2005, "Lawmakers develop plan for water talks"]. They write: "... which is why we admire House Bill 1177 by Rep. Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, and Sen. Jim Isgar, D-Hesperus. The bill would create nine 'basin roundtables' representing the state's seven river basins and two demographically unique sub-basins. Besides studying water resources and needs, each roundtable would appoint two delegates to a Statewide Interbasin Compact Committee. That body, in turn, will help foster negotiations between the various basins to craft new cooperative water compacts modeled after the multi-state Colorado River Compact."
The Cortez Journal reports that snowfall continues to blanket the San Juan mountains. From the article: "Apparently, Abernaki and Lakota tribal members have been performing the prophetic Bear Medicine Wheel Ceremony, singing sacred prayer songs in the eight cardinal points encircling the San Bernadinos - Big Bear at the center. Following the devastating fires last year, the purpose of the dances was to help the drought-ridden region with snow and rain. Because of seven years of drought conditions, other tribes, including the Utes, have been performing snow dances at some of the resorts in the West. Mother Nature seems to be responding. The National Weather Service is reporting an upper-level low moving into the Four Corners region Friday. Snow should continue all day today and into Sunday afternoon in the upper elevations before it leaves the area."
