RSS Goodness
Dave Winer: "Today's an important day in the history of Scripting News, and as it turns out, the history of the web. On this day in 1999, Netscape went public with its RSS reader, the first-ever. It was called My.Netscape.Com, and it was something like a page layout program in a browser. You arranged boxes containing news from a publication or a weblog. They got their service to work with Scripting News (I knew because they were sending me questions about my XMLization). Anyway, the news of their rollout is in the archive for the day, six years ago, and in a DaveNet piece that explained the news to the industry."
I remember when Dave Winer used to write DaveNet regularly. The first DaveNet for the 'Ol Coyote was Me and Microsoft. He was right then and he's right a lot of the time now, the old grouch.

The Rise of Open Source
Daily Kos: "The biggest culprit is the open source Firefox, which has garnered about 25 percent share of the dKos readership in a matter of mere months, with no advertising campaign. That's pretty cool, and yet more evidence that open source is the way of the future."

Political Blogging
David Fletcher: "Representative Steve Urquhart's foray into blogging is building. House Majority Leader, Jeff Alexander, has his own blog now, and the Salt Lake Tribune reports that House Republicans are planning to deploy a group blog at http://www.utahhousemajority.com. I'm excited about this as a major e-democracy initiative. It looks like Rep. Urquhart is getting a lot of feedback from everyday citizens and that can only be healthy for government. Traditionally, lobbyists from major interest groups dominate access to legislators. This provides a much better venue for the public at large."

Denver November 2006 Election
Focus on the Family plans to put a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage on the fall ballot in Colorado, according to the Denver Post [February 11, 2005, "Gay-marriage fight looms"]. From the article, "With Democrats controlling both chambers of the Colorado legislature for the first time in 44 years, Minnery said the effort in Colorado would involve gathering enough signatures to earn a ballot spot instead of lobbying legislators to refer it to the ballot."
Update: Colorado Pols: "Just a friendly reminder that Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Coffman will participate in a Q&A with Colorado Pols on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Coffman will answer reader questions throughout the day."
