After the show tonight (thanks DF), I was able to scoot down to 4th & B to see the second set of The Newport Jazz Allstars. Claudia and others from Jazz 88 were awaiting and had already heard what sounded like a great first set. These are all stud players (Cedar Walton, Howard Alden, Peter Washington, Justo Almario, Terence Blanchard, Idris Muhammed) and they played together well in different setups, as the set list attests too. I especially dug 'Goodbye', with Terence, Peter, and Cedar in a trio...such great playing by Terence. I also liked Justo's tune 'Salvation Army', which the author played some killer licks on also. There's a quick slide show from the gig (you can also click the picture below), which for the most part proves that I need to seriously scale up on the camera if this is going to work. Just imagine these shots with the great lighting, but being clearer and closer...
Claudia and I took Terence over to Downtown Charlie Browns for an Arrogant Bastard (me-o) and Vodka/Cranberry (Claudia/Terence). Terence teaches at U New Orleans (Jazz department head) and USC (sounds like visiting professor), in addition to lots of work on movies (a Spike Lee documentary on Jim Brown, Ice Cube's new flick, others) which gives him something different to stretch on other than the standard Jazz writing and playing....not that that's a bad gig at all. Kind of fun to wrap with another regular guy...that's getting paid for expressing himself...right on, right on! |
