8:00 pm PT - Hour 3 of The New Jazz Thing! Live!! The New Marilyn Crispell Interview An interview with Marilyn Crispell. I can't wait to listen to this interview again. Tomorrow morning on the way to work. Her classical training and chamber music composing led in the direction of the avant-garde, as opposed to the mainstream. She also giggled (as Miff Mole put it) which is a good thing. When you can giggle at 11:30 pm. Hey, it's that time right now. Anyway, I'll try to find a way to get this interview off the DAT and onto the site ASAP. I want to share!
Thanks Marilyn, and Silvia, and Dan, and Miff, and Claudia. |

That previous sentence was written at about 7:40 pm or so when I was hurrying to finish prep for the Marilyn Crispell interview. Now it's 10:15 pm PT and I'm updating this. |
7:22 pm PT - Break. Andrew Gilbert in today's UT: "Marilyn Crispell s latest works touch on a more romantic side" Does she see this or what does she think of it? Is there romance for Marilyn?
What are her other sides? Her fierce side? |

Rick Lopez of The Marilyn Crispell Sessionography (a mouthful to type) has a question for Marilyn Crispell this evening (one hour away). "Marilyn, Rick Lopez and his wife Sandy would like to know-- will you be home between June 3rd and 9th? We'll be coming through and would like to stop by so we can watch each other eat again."
Let's send out the word and let folks know that they can email me a question for Marilyn. Probably will be better than mine! Email@NewJazzThing.com |

From Marilyn Crispell's ECM Records Bio "Born in Philadelphia in 1947, Crispell was schooled in classical music, studying piano from the age of 7. Graduating in piano and composition from the New England Conservatory of Music, she came late to jazz, but by 1978 was teaching at Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio. "I think at the age of 28, or so, and then into the Studio. Why go in the avant-free direction (as opposed to a more trad one)? Are the distinctions between trad and avant-free and other offshoots apparent to musicians? Do you choose to go in one direction or another or...how?
This could be fun. OK. Gotta find tune 1. Hour 1. http://KSDS-FM.org/NewJazzThing. |
