Patrick Logan writes: " SAS and Microsoft are competitors in the decision support and CRM markets. SAS has an interest in discrediting dotNET. Whatever valid statements are made, the intent has to be considered PR." Yes I suppose they are competitors in some ways - although its a bit of a stretch to say MS has anything that comes close to SAS. I've worked with SAS's stuff a few years ago, and I was impressed. SAS as a company has a much better record than MS when it comes to how they act, as opposed to what they say. Based on the actions of MS we've just witnessed two sets of Antitrust trials. Just to clarify, SAS's Goodnight says "My view is that .Net is a proprietary system that people should steer clear of. You've got a company that is so powerful that they can come out with their own proprietary system and get everybody to use it so that it is not portable to any of the Unix [operating systems]." Nobody ever accused Goodnight of being a great orator. But he makes the same point that many, many people in the industry make. It encpsulates the essence of the .NET issue that many have expressed - its a Windows only thing and in the end it forces you to play with MS if you want to or not. (Java doesn't impose the same limitation)
And yes thanks to Sam Ruby for spell checking. I've been having too many test drives in too many nice cars lately, which turned a Goodnight into a Goodyear in the original post.
