TidBITS: Apple Changes the Face of Digital Music 'Apple has a winner here, for the same reason the iPod is the leading portable music player despite its high price. Put bluntly, Apple cares deeply about user experience. That's not to imply that the user experience of the iTunes Music Store or all Apple's products is perfect, but the end result is almost always that Apple's product offers a better user experience than the competition.'

IHT: Paris, the wireless wonder? 'An experiment is under way in Paris that aims to turn the city into one huge Wi-Fi hot spot, making it what could be the first large wireless city in the world. . A dozen Wi-Fi antennas have been set up outside subway stations along a major north-south bus route, providing Internet access to anyone near them who has a laptop computer or personal desk assistant equipped to receive the signals. The access is free until June 30 but will require paid subscriptions afterward.

Article says they aim to charge much less than what it typically charged in the US. I had thought Manhattan had pretty good coverage and that it was largely free, community access.

AlterNet: U.S. Hires Christian Extremists to Produce Arabic News 'The U.S. government this week launched its Arabic language satellite TV news station for mostly Muslim Iraq. It is being produced in a studio ? Grace Digital Media ? controlled by fundamentalist Christians who are rabidly pro-Israel. That's grace as in "by the grace of God." '
I always said that Bush was one clever fellow. Someone make it stop!

Nat'l Acad Press Catalog: In the Mind's Eye: 'The archer stands and pulls back the bow, visualizing the path of the arrow to the target. Does this mental exercise enhance performance? Can we all use such techniques to improve performance in our daily lives?'
I refer to this as 'zenning it'. I love the idea. I haven't thought about it for a long time. There's been too much noise in my life. Actually, I don't necessarily think conciously of visualizing anything. Sounds too new-agey. But it reminds me that when I'm calm and confident I can 'just zen it'.

Sunday Herald 'The Bush administration has admitted that Saddam Hussein probably had no weapons of mass destruction.

Senior officials in the Bush administration have admitted that they would be 'amazed' if weapons of mass destruction (WMD) were found in Iraq. [...]

Now, however, according to the US official, pre-emptive action is justified against a nation which simply has the ability to develop unconventional weapons.

Or which might be gaining the ability to develop said weapons. Or who the US thinks maybe might be thinking about it. And whoever the US happens to be pissed off at at any pont in time. This would be hilarious if weren't so frightening.

Erik and Mark Baard: May 2003 Archives 'The "personal server," which is being developed at Intel Research by ubiquitous computing wizard Roy Want, is the size of a deck of cards, half the weight of an iPaq, and has no i/o, no screen, and no peripherals. The device never leaves its user's pocket or handbag.'
There we go.

50 Years After, Opening Senator Joe McCarthy's Closed Files 'Put simply, the documents show that McCarthy used closed hearings to weed out potential witnesses who defended themselves effectively and instead called to the stand only those who appeared weak or confused.'
Composer Aaron Copeland was called to a preliminary hearing but was too clever for McCarthy.

In the map at left, click on #1 to begin a self-guided tour of this fascinating realm high in the Himalayas. All photos were shot in fall 2000 and summer 2001.'
