Why we need a public newspaper 'Our highly concentrated, privately owned media give us a mountain of trivial and biased news. Here's an alternative: a print-form CBC, says PATRICK WATSON'

I understand his reasoning. The proposal doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell in our world. The good news is that a 21st C equivalent is slowly arriving here and here.

Yearning for Yorn 'ALEXANDRA GILL won't soon forget the day she met the young rocker with the scruffy good looks and bruised bedroom drawl. And the actual content of the interview? Oh, who cares about that

VANCOUVER -- It's a bittersweet epiphany that could be ripped right out of a Pete Yorn song. About halfway through our interview, I realize the yummy young rocker has nothing interesting to say. Oh, well. I really don't have anything very interesting to ask. I'm too busy imagining what would happen if I reached out and twirled his long, shaggy hair around my finger.'

It's a relief to know that a woman can make a fool of herself when smitten. I wonder how this would go over if it were a man were 'interviewing' a winsome young female songwriter.

The Globe and Mail-DAVID MACFARLANE '. . . . and a politely worded query addressed to our ever-vigilant American friends. Not that I want to upset them, of course. They seem a little touchy these days, and I'm beginning to think that if we don't start falling in whenever they blow their bugle, we're going to end up with the place crawling with embedded CNN reporters. Still -- and I don't mean to show any disrespect, or disloyalty, or independence -- I'm just wondering if they could tell me why possessing a marijuana cigarette isn't okay but owning an assault rifle is?'

CBC News: Diplomat warns of repercussions if globalization fails poor 'The loss of confidence in capitalism and reforms have translated into a loss of confidence in democracy as a whole and opened people to the views expressed by anti-globalization protesters.'
Planting the seeds of terrorism.

Tornadoes Leave at Least 39 Dead; Towns Shattered
The relentless barrage of some 80 tornadoes that tore through eight states on Sunday killed 39 people and smashed hundreds of buildings. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]
Nasty. We must be getting the edge of this storm. On the way home this evening Olivia and I had our umbrellas blown all over the place. Olivia was slightly alarmed. I joked that one gust almost blew me away. She asked if there was such a thing as a wind that could blow a person away. 'Tornadoes' I reminded her. She noted that we didn't have many of those around here. I assured her she was right. 'Toronto's a pretty safe place.' 'Yes it is. We're very lucky.'
