Report Criticizes Post-Sept. 11 Interviews

Using immigration records, Justice officials in late 2001 identified thousands of foreign males whose demographic and visa profiles bore similarities to those of the Sept. 11 terrorists, the report said. The GAO found that, as of March, 43 percent of 7,602 people had been interviewed.

The report found that "none of the law enforcement officials with whom we spoke could provide examples of investigative leads that resulted from the project." The report also said that "more than half of the law enforcement officers we spoke with expressed concerns about the quality of the questions asked and the value of the responses obtained," and many believed the project had a negative effect on community relations. At least one hoped that something worthwhile was coming out of these interviews. Apparently not.

CBC News: Missing Toronto girl found dead 'Jones, who lived in a west Toronto neighbourhood, was last seen around 6:30 p.m. Monday night. She had walked a younger friend home then didn't come home herself. A full-scale search began around 9 p.m. Monday.'
Argh. Scary shit.

Lift the sanctions -- economic weapons of mass destruction 'Regardless of one's views on the war, everyone should favour immediately lifting the sanctions. Strange as it may seem, U.S. and British war-making has been one of the least deadly policy tools used to coerce Saddam Hussein in the past 12 years. The antisanctions campaign never triggered mass protests in Western cities, but sanctions were far more deadly than all the U.S. guns, bombs and missiles combined.'
Extraordinary. Of course it was the US and Britain who insisted on keeping the sanctions going. But I'm baffled by the UN's eagerness to play politics at this point in the game.

Norah Jones's secret weapon 'It's Monday night at Toronto's Orbit Room, and nobody recognizes the young, talented man at the front table. He's Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jesse Harris, but without the gold trophy or the "I'm With Norah" T-shirt, he's just another guy in the crowd.'
Sounds like a real person.

What's this? We won't be able to roll our eyes at that ugly monochromatic money anymore? It's still rather dull looking.

How to quit smoking cigarettes
Disclaimer- this will not work for everyone. In fact, it is very, very hard to do. Quitting cigarettes is the hardest thing I have ever done. I will start out with how and why I got started, for those nonsmokers who think (and rightly so) that I am an idiot for ever starting in the first place. If you don't smoke tobacco, I urge you to never start. But if you start, here's what worked for me, and what didn't. [Kuro5hin.org]
