What the Bush tax cut could have bought

That $330 billion could have covered every uninsured child in the country and paid for millions of teachers and child-care workers. Instead it's going to the richest Americans. [Salon]

O'Reilly Network: Apple As Innovator [May 29, 2003] '[W]hat Apple does so well is to realize the potential in a technology, and to frame it in such a way that people discover that they need it. In a way, they are cultural innovators more than they are tech innovators. They have a really great sense of where technology is going.'

MSNBC: Microsoft, AOL settle browser suit...

MSNBC: Microsoft, AOL settle browser suit. MS pays AOL $750 million. Web developers get $0. Web users get a buggy browser. Looks like AOL is switching back to MSIE. Rob Enderle is quoted in article, says AOL is divesting Netscape. Huh? Article written by Jon Bonne, the guy I debated. [Scripting News]

CBC Sports: King of goaltenders retires 'Roy's influence seemingly opened the floodgates as Quebec goalies poured into the NHL. This season more than a third of the NHL's starting goalies were from that province, including many of the league's most successful: Giguere, Martin Brodeur, Patrick Lalime, and Dan Cloutier among others.'

CBC News: Canada OKs missile defence talks with U.S. 'McCallum stressed Canada's desire to keep space free from weapons, saying the American position on the issue is "unclear." '
Trying to have it both ways. We should vigorously appose this fantasy.

Carbon Copy Cloner - Mirror an OS X drive

The macosxhints Rating:[Score: 9 out of 10]Developer: Mike Bombich [Product Page] Although mentioned here a few times previously (including this hint from a year ago), Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) has never been listed as a Pick of the Week. This is a definite oversight on my part, as it's an amazing little program.[macosxhints]

The Register: Clear Channelization of America to commence Monday 'Regulations preventing the complete colonization of America's television airwaves by a handful of media cartels are set to be relaxed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Monday, much to the chagrin of the few surviving independent publishers and broadcasters and the few remaining American citizens not already whipped into a state of strenuous flag-idolatry and xenophobia by said media cartels.'

UserLand guru editing Radio UserLand Kick Start

News to me: Brent Simmons, a former UserLand developer whose initials are all over Radio UserLand and Frontier, is tech editing Radio UserLand Kick Start.

This is a relief. Though, of course, as the author of the book I must claim deep expertise in the subject matter, Simmons has forgotten more about UserLand products than I know. The odds that this book will be a disgrace to my good name and that of the UserLand community just went down considerably. [Rogers Cadenhead: Workbench: Radio Userland Kick Start]

My goodness. Well, the book just got a major credibility boost. It's not that we doubted Mr. Cadenhead's potential but having Simmons on board is the best possible news. It'll be a must-have book for Radio-philes. I know it will be reader friendly but I personally hope the book gets a bit geeky now and then.

Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | US looks away as new ally tortures Islamists 'The US is funding those it once condemned. Last year Washington gave Uzbekistan $500m (£300m) in aid. The police and intelligence services - which the state department's website says use "torture as a routine investigation technique" received $79m of this sum.

Mr Karimov was President Bush's guest in Washington in March last year. They signed a "declaration" which gave Uzbekistan security guarantees and promised to strengthen "the material and technical base of [their] law enforcement agencies". '

In ten years they'll be the US's new public enemy number 1 and the yanks will be bombing the bejesus out of the people there.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | US finds evidence of WMD at last - buried in a field near Maryland 'Even more embarrassing for the Pentagon, there was no documentation about the various biological agents disposed of at the US bio-defence centre at Fort Detrick. Iraq's failure to come up with paperwork proving the destruction of its biological arsenal was portrayed by the US as evidence of deception in the run-up to the war.'

White House insider cleans up Bush's image on film 'A copy of the script obtained by The Globe and Mail reveals a prime-time drama starring a nearly infallible, heroic president with little or no dissension in his ranks and a penchant for delivering articulate, stirring, off-the-cuff addresses to colleagues.

That the whole thing was filmed in Canada and is eligible for financial aid from Canadian taxpayers, and that its loyal Republican writer-producer is a Canadian citizen best known for his adaptation of  The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz , are ironies that will be lost on most of its American viewers when it airs on the Showtime network this fall.'

Too funny! I mean the part about the articulate president.

CBC News: Chrétien talks about differences with Bush 'A candid Prime Minister Jean Chrétien told reporters on a flight to Europe Tuesday that he and U.S. President George Bush have many opposing views. [...] Chrétien said his government has had a string of budget surpluses while the "right-wing" government in Washington is running up a $500-billion deficit.

Chrétien highlighted several differences between himself and Bush.

He said Bush opposes abortion while he favours a woman's right to choose.

Bush supports capital punishment and Chrétien does not. Chrétien supports gun control and Bush does not. '

I like it! Kinda like the differences between the two countries.

More than 6,000 people around Toronto are in quarantine after Sars resurfaced six days ago.

Apple Finds the Future for Online Music Sales

Apple Computer's new service, iTunes Music Store, has been the first real success story in the long effort to sell music over the Internet. [New York Times: NYT HomePage] 'What is notable about the success of iTunes is that it has been achieved not by a music company but by a computer company. And this makes sense, because it was a computer solution that was needed, not a music one. Even more impressive is that Apple's coup has been accomplished relatively simply and cheaply. It owns nearly everything it is using: the Web browser software (Safari), the computer media player (iTunes), the portable digital music player (iPod), the streaming technology to play music videos (Quicktime), the software that creates the service (WebObjects), the computer itself (Macintosh) and the operating system (MacOS).

"Apple is the new MTV," said Numair Faraz, 18, who has started several online service companies. "It is the new funnel for music. When things moved from radio to video, MTV was the sole source of music. Now Apple is going to control the distribution and the promotion of music. The entire ecosystem they are using is theirs." Mr. Faraz said he bought roughly $115 worth of music at the iTunes store last month. In comparison, he said, he spent no money on CD's in the last year.'

Tax Law Bars Child Credit for Many Poor Families

Due to a last-minute revision in the tax bill that the president signed, millions of low-income families will not get the increased child credit that is in the measure. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]
